Environmental Impact of Tourism

The Reality of Tourism

In this article Environmental Impacts Of Tourism, Ugur Sunlu argues the effects of tourism on natural resources, environmental pollution, and physical environment. He also explains the impact traveling, has on a global scale and how it can contribute to environmental conservation. The author claims that the negative impacts of tourism are causing destruction to environmental resources. For example the level of traveling has peaked over the years and the use of visitors is much greater than the environments ability to cope. This all leads to increased pollution, natural habitat loss, and can put a strain on water resources. I agree with the author’s claim that in certain areas where resources are already very limited the struggle for survival increases but also point out the effect it has on the residents. The residents in the area are the ones who are left to deal with the consequences as the tourists are always prioritized. With tourism comes along economic disadvantages for local residents as they need to be able to fund tourist demands, which leads to an increase of taxes. The overall price of living also increases in terms of rent and rate making it harder to afford a place to live. In certain areas residents have begun protesting to stop tourism or at least find a way to control it to make their living more affordable. I completely understand the frustration of the local residents as living in a college town where tourism is not that popular, rates still seem to increase every year and the struggle feels as if it is never ending.

Another article How Tourism Affects the Environment, Rinkesh also emphasizes how the invasion of natural habitats to construct hotels and roads creates a big risk to the endangered species. I strongly agree with his claim as these animals are forced to leave their homes behind and migrate into unknown areas that are less beneficial to their survival. Not only are these animals being pushed out but the beauty of such sacred places are also being destroyed and taken with them. It makes me very sad as a future vet to think about how lost these animals feel when they see their homes being destroyed and not being able to stand up for themselves.

Although traveling has its cons, which I can agree with, for the most part it can also be beneficial in the sense that it can contribute to environmental protection and conservation. Tourism attracts financial contributions to areas that are in danger or in great need through the use of entree fees that go towards special fees for reconstruction. While it brings in financial stability it also spreads awareness to the public by having closer contact with the environment, letting the tourist, appreciate its greatness.
